Memory processing During Sleep

Scientists have shown numerous ways in which sleep is related to memory. In a study conducted by Turner, Drummond, Salamat, and Brown working memory was shown to be affected by sleep deprivation. Working memory is important because it keeps information active for further processing and supports higher-level cognitive functions such as decision making, reasoning, and episodic memory. Turner et al. allowed 18 women and 22 men to sleep only 26 minutes per night over a 4-day period. Subjects were given initial cognitive tests while well rested and then tested again twice a day during the 4 days of sleep deprivation. On the final test the average working memory span of the sleep deprived group had dropped by 38% in comparison to the control group.

Memory also seems to be affected differently by certain stages of sleep such as REM and slow-wave sleep (SWS). In one study cited in Born, Rasch, and Gais multiple groups of human subjects were used: wake control groups and sleep test groups. Sleep and wake groups were taught a task and then tested on it both on early and late nights, with the order of nights balanced across participants. When the subjects' brains were scanned during sleep, hypnograms revealed that SWS was the dominant sleep stage during the early night representing around 23% on average for sleep stage activity. The early night test group performed 16% better on the declarative memory test than the control group. During late night sleep, REM became the most active sleep stage at about 24%, and the late night test group performed 25% better on the procedural memory test than the control group. This indicates that procedural memory benefits from late REM-rich sleep whereas declarative memory benefits from early SWS-rich sleep.

Another study conducted by Datta[30 indirectly supports these results. The subjects chosen were 22 male rats. A box was constructed where a single rat could move freely from one end to the other. The bottom of the box was made of a steel grate. A light would shine in the box accompanied by a sound. After a 5 second delay an electrical shock would be applied. Once the shock commenced the rat could move to the other end of the box, ending the shock immediately. The rat could also use the 5-second delay to move to the other end of the box and avoid the shock entirely. The length of the shock never exceeded 5 seconds. This was repeated 30 times for half the rats. The other half, the control group, was placed in the same trial but the rats were shocked regardless of their reaction. After each of the training sessions the rat would be placed in a recording cage for 6 hours of polygraphic recordings. This process was repeated for 3 consecutive days. This study found that during the post-trial sleep recording session rats spent 25.47% more time in REM sleep after learning trials than after control trials. These trials support the results of the Born et al. study, indicating an obvious correlation between REM sleep and procedural knowledge.

Another interesting observation of the Datta study is that the learning group spent 180% more time in SWS than did the control group during the post-trial sleep-recording session. This phenomenon is supported by a study performed by Kudrimoti, Barnes, and McNaughton. This study shows that after spatial exploration activity, patterns of hippocampal place cells are reactivated during SWS following the experiment. In a study by Kudrimoti et al. seven rats were run through a linear track using rewards on either end

The rats would then be placed in the track for 30 minutes to allow them to adjust (PRE), then they ran the track with reward based training for 30 minutes (RUN), and then they were allowed to rest for 30 minutes. During each of these three periods EEG data were collected for information on the rats' sleep stages. Kudrimoti et al. computed the mean firing rates of hippocampal place cells during pre-behavior SWS (PRE) and three 10-minute intervals in post-behavior SWS (POST) by averaging across 22 track-running sessions from seven rats. The results showed that 10 minutes after the trial RUN session there was a 12% increase in the mean firing rate of hippocampal place cells from the PRE level, however after 20 minutes the mean firing rate returned rapidly toward the PRE level. The elevated firing of hippocampal place cells during SWS after spatial exploration could explain why there were elevated levels of SWS sleep in Datta's study as it also dealt with a form of spatial exploration.

The different studies all suggest that there is a correlation between sleep and the many complex functions of memory. Harvard sleep researchers Saper and Stickgold point out that an essential part of memory and learning consists of nerve cell dendrites sending information to the cell body to be organized into new neuronal connections. This process demands that no external information is presented to these dendrites, and they suggest that this may be why it is during sleep that we solidify memories and organize knowledge.

Stress can affect our health in many ways. Stress itself is perfectly natural and, providing it is kept in control, stress doesn't always adversely affect our health. We'll look below at some of the less healthy effects on your health that stress can give.
So, how does stress affect your health?
Depression. Stress can be a big factor in depression. Whilst depression can be reduced with modern drugs, it's much better to get to the root cause of the stress that is leading to it.
Excessive stress can lead to ulcers developing. These can be amongst the first signs that we are too stressed.
Hair loss can be a sign of too much stress. People can quite literally "pull their hair out" if they are subjected to excessive stress.
When our body is stressed, our immune system is stretched. Diseases such as diabetes can manifest when our body is subject to too much stress.
When we are stressed, we can display anxiety disorders such as obsessive compulsive disorder. Sometimes those closest to us will notice these problems before we do. Reducing your stress levels will oftentimes help reduce these disorders.
Too much anger can be a sign of stress. Road rage is an example of a temporary effect of stress on our health. If you have become a more "angry" person, this could well be a sign that you are under too much stress. Anger management courses can help but it is best to remove the underlying cause of your anger if at all possible. With the help of friends or a professional anger management counselor, you should be able to discover this root cause.
Obesity can be caused by stress. Comfort eating is often used to help reduce stress. That tasty looking chocolate cake can quite likely reduce your stress in the short term but could lead to obesity if you resort to comfort eating to reduce your stress too often.
Too much stress over too long a period can even lead to heart disease or a heart attack. Whilst this is an extreme example of how stress affects your health, you should make certain that you address your stress levels to minimize the likelihood of your heart having to tell you that you are too stressed.
These are just a few examples of how stress affects your life. You can probably identify more factors in your day-to-day life that are leading to stress. Start taking steps to lower your stress now, whilst your health is still good.

NAIROBI (AFP) - A baby hippopotamus that survived the tsunami waves on the Kenyan coast has formed a strong bond with a giant male century-old tortoise in an animal facility in the port city of Mombassa, officials said the hippopotamus, nicknamed Owen and weighing about 300 kilograms (650 pounds), was swept down Sabaki River into the Indian Ocean , then forced back to shore when tsunami waves struck the Kenyan coast on December 26, before wildlife rangers rescued him.
'It is incredible. A-less-than- a-year-old hippo has adopted a male tortoise, about a century old, and the tortoise seems to be very happy with being a 'mother',' ecologist Paula Kahumbu, who is in charge of Lafarge Park , told AFP.

'After it was swept away and lost its mother, the hippo was traumatized. It had to look for something to be a surrogate mother. Fortunately , it landed on the tortoise and established a strong bond.. They swim, eat and sleep together,' the ecologist added. 'The hippo follows the tortoise exactly the way it followed its mother. If somebody approaches the tortoise, the hippo becomes aggressive, as if protecting its biological mother,' Kahumbu added. 'The hippo is a young baby, he was left at a very tender age and by nature, hippos are social animals that like to stay with their mothers for four years,' he explained.

'Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.'

This is a real story that shows that our differences don't matter much when we need the comfort of another. We could all learn a lesson from these two creatures of God, 'Look beyond the differences and find a way to walk the path together.'

Andropause symptoms vary from one person to another. It is generally affected by the health condition. The andropausal years can be directed to the question of courage. Men who are in this condition has the tendency to become more conservative and less of a risk taker. Fear can easily stun them. While some men fear death, most andropausal men fear to be too dependent.

The next attack hits the pride of being productive. As a common knowledge, men ought to be dynamic, to be noticed for his achievements and efforts. The source of man's happiness can be rooted on being the firm foundation of the family. When he reaches the andropausal period, he feels his inability to support his family as well as to manage complex business.

Whether you want to win the World Memory Championships, ace your history test, or simply remember where you put your keys, this article can get you started. Scientists believe that exercising your brain can create a `cognitive reserve' that will help you stay sharp as you age.1. Convince yourself that you do have a good memory that will improve. Too many people get stuck here and convince themselves that their memory is bad, that they are just not good with names, that numbers just slip out of their minds for some reason. Erase those thoughts and vow to improve your memory. Commit yourself to the task and bask in your achievements — it's hard to keep motivated if you beat yourself down every time you make a little bit of progress.

2. Keep your brain active. The brain is not a muscle, but regularly "exercising" the brain actually does keep it growing and spurs the development of new nerve connections that can help improve memory. By developing new mental skills—especially complex ones such as learning a new language or learning to play a new musical instrument—and challenging your brain with puzzles and games you can keep your brain active and improve its physiological functioning.3. If you want to associate a child with a book, try not to visualize the child reading the book – that's too simple and forgettable. The more times you hear, see, or think about something, the more surely you'll remember it, right? It's a no-brainer. When you want to remember something, be it your new coworker's name or your best friend's birthday, repeat it, either out loud or silently. Try writing it down; think about it.10. When you become an adult, parents tend to be the hardest people in the world to ask money from. Not only because they probably have no money to spare but also because you are expected to provide for yourself now! The worst part is when you have to listen to lectures about hard work, thriftiness, and responsibility. Like that would be any consolation to your empty stomach and equally empty leather money clip.
Parents are not exactly heartless. In fact, your parents might just be teaching you about adult responsibilities that you refuse to take as you cling to being a Peter Pan. There is nothing wrong with being a Peter Pan as much as there is nothing wrong with Michael Jackson. Or maybe there is? But I digress. Here is how to make your father hide his leather money clip faster than you can whine "Oh, Pleaaasssseee help me, Mother".
Be the Greatest Liar Who Ever Lived
Never ever tell the truth behind your begging them for money. You can invent good excuses for your real troubles - you are sick when you actually are pregnant and want an abortion fast; you have overran your credit card limit because you bought nice things for your sisters in college when you actually have gambling debts enough to pay the year's mortgage; or you need to take maintenance medicines for depression and anxiety when you are actually a junkie.
If your parents know the real trouble you are in, you can bet your last dollar on your woefully-slim leather money clip that your request will be rejected. Until such time you tell them the truth, maybe.
Discuss How You Plan to Spend the Money
But discuss it in such a way that your true needs will not be addressed. You can be as imaginative as you want in wasting the money they will be loaning you. If you know they have funds for a Hawaii vacation, tell them that you want to go to Hawaii because the doctor ordered it. (Use the depression and anxiety excuse, if you like)
Not only will you end up with lesser money on your leather money clip (cab fare or gasoline sounds familiar?) but you will also be alienating yourself from your miserly parents. No more "Mom, thanks for the quick loan".
Just Because I Said So
You have often heard this phrase from your parents when you were younger. You want to wear Goth makeup and they told you no; you ask why, they tell you "Just because I said so!" Well, now is the time to use the very same phrase to have your wish done.
Never ever give your parents time to decide about your request. Never ever put your reasons on paper lest they find an "i" with no dots and a "t" with no slash. If they sense something fishy about your request, there goes the dollars to feed your hungry leather money clip.
It is a Donation, Not a Loan
And the best way to scare off your parents is to tell them you are asking, not borrowing. Be as insensitive as you can be about their needs. You might just find yourself kissing the door while they slam it on your face. Your old bedroom door, of course. Nobody said anything about loving parents actually throwing you out on the streets!
Of course, if you really need the money for valid purposes, you should never ever follow this advice. Otherwise, you really are asking for trouble, not money.

Most are well aware that men and women handle their emotions differently, and the way that both genders handle stress is really no different. In general, women appear to handle stress better than men, while men try to ignore it instead of trying to deal with it. This natural tendency is probably one of the worst things a person can do, and it could possibly be on of the main reasons why so many men are prone to severe cases of depression. The stress becomes too much for them to ignore and by this time many will try to self-medicate, or even try to run from their stress through different means.There are many things in life that can create stress for men, especially married men. Society can be demanding on men, especially if they are married because they not only have to look out for themselves, they are pressured to properly support and care for their family, as well as to protect their family. Much of this is natural for the man to worry about these things and their family because it has generally always been that way. Even though more women are starting to become the bread winners for many families, the men tend to feel it is still their purpose to ensure that their family has everything that they need. Many of the specific reasons for men to become stressed would include their need to excel at work, being unemployed, conflicts in the home, divorces or breakups, poor health, financial worries and/or non-ideal living environment. As a result of their need to try and ignore their stress or simply fight through it, many will start to suffer physical and mental symptoms created by the intense stress they are experiencing. Some will suffer headaches, others will suffer stomach aches, neck and/or shoulder pains, back pain, have the inability to sleep properly and/or even have a loss of appetite, have a difficult time in concentration on their work, become frustrated, irritable and even depressed. Too much stress takes its toll on a person, especially those who do not get the help that they need. It can eventually turn into heart problems or some other kind of health problem. Some men will even go so far as to try and self-medicate by taking drugs or drinking excessively, which is not the way to properly deal with stress because it will only make it worse in the end.
